Plumbing Maintenance Checklist

Being a homeowner, it is your duty to look after every aspect of your home. Everything requires regular maintenance in order to work efficiently for years and home plumbing system is one of the most important aspect of your home that needs to be taken care of.

When thinking about your plumbing system, you need to first realize the number of appliances and pipes that are included in the system. Here are a few preventive measures that if followed can help look for potential plumbing problems that should be addressed before they become a real issue.

Leaking pipes are very common at homes. Exterior walls and pipes are the areas more prone to leaks. So, check for water marks or puddles of water.

Look for signs of corrosion. Corrosion of pipes can cause leaks and bad pipe connections if not corrected. A sign of corrosion is green stains around brass and copper fittings and on shutoff valves.

Make sure to test the water pressure i.e. the flow with which it comes out of any faucets and shower heads. If the water pressure is low, there can be a problem like sediment formation or any other blockage in the faucet or the shower head. You can look for any blockage by opening the shower head.

Keep a regular check on the drainage system. Keep checking the kitchen sink, bathroom tub drains. If the water is flowing smoothly, it is fine, else there can be a clog somewhere in the drain which can lead to serious problems. If you see bubbles when water drains out, there can be a blockage.

Check the toilets regularly. See if the toilet is flushing properly. Toilet water should not run after flushing and there should be no water on the floor after you flush. Open the tank lid and check for all the parts.

Following these above steps annually will help you prevent many plumbing problems that can otherwise be very costly if not detected on time.
